The Idea And Who Stands For It

Since decades the sustainability of economics is a subject of growing importance, and the market for investments oriented to sustainability has experienced an impressive boom during the last years; already today it gives important impulses for the encouragement of a sustainable economy.

To this day, however, this crucial subject Sustainability is not taken into account appropriately, is not perceived by the broad public at all or merely sporadically.

The creation of a branches-general and enterprise-general public forum and pushing a continuous, broad social discussion process was the occasion for the establishment of the 'Verein zur Förderung des Sustainability-Gedankens e.V.'.

Companies and persons, who have set off to sustainable trading, are welcome.

Sustainability: An Idea Becomes A Key Note

In recent years, when investing, the consumer awareness of environmental, ethical and social values steadily sharpened - supported by the discussions on climate change, environmental protection, energy supply, and exacerbated by the economic and financial crisis.

More and more people want to take responsibility with their capital for an intact world of tomorrow. For about 50 percent of investors already consider investments that take sustainable criteria into account. A huge market for the financial industry - but also a clear demand from consumers.

The Sustainability Congress is one of the pioneers of this trend. It helps to broadly communicate the topic in the financial sector, to cross-link expertise and to provide transparency. It promotes a continuous process of discussion on a wide scale and sees itself as an engine for sustainable finance.

Sustainability: What does that mean?

The term comes from forestry: Who wants to conserve a forest may lumber only as much wood as can be replenished. Secured long term are only the forest owners and wardens who are living from the output and not the substance.

In 1992, at a conference in Rio de Janeiro, the United Nations have transferred the principle of sustainability to international society: economic, environmental and development policies should be geared to meet the needs of present generations without compromising the opportunities of future generations.

Current challenges include:
  • Climate change
  • Limited availability of natural ressources
  • Limited availability of water
  • The loss of biodiversity
  • The changing population structure
  • The responsible use of capital
Only when we solve our problems today, and do not leave them for future generations, we secure a future of peace and prosperity for everyone. This is sustainability.
